ENGLISH PROJECT#1 FIRST BGU- MESOPOTAMIA- GROUP#2
MESOPOTAMIA
The religion of Mesopotamia was polytheistic and its fundamental features were developed by the Sumerians, who grouped their gods into triads. They believed that their world was controlled by gods and goddesses, demons and monsters that were created by gods with human bodies and animal heads.
There were hundreds of gods who were responsible for everything in the world but their highest divinities were Anu (King of creation), Enlil (Lord of men) and Ea (God of waters), who is attributed the creation of all gods, the world, men and political organization.
ZIGURATS👸👩👩
The Mesopotamians had temples called ziggurats that (ziqqurat, in Akkadian) means 'to build on a high site' and they were stepped pyramids of which some vestiges have remained.
Some consider them huge altars. Most likely, they were the site of hierogamic rites in which the priestess joined the divinity, represented by the king or high priest. From the top of the ziggurats it is very likely that magicians and fortune-tellers observed the stars. The ziggurats were not the place where public acts or ceremonies were carried out, but they were considered the abode of the gods. Thanks to the ziggurat, people could be close to the gods.
