People and Community in Ecuador CUENCA -AZUAY
Families are closed and enjoy most activities together, like daytrips to the mountains or to the beach. Brothers and sisters attend social events together.
Ecuadorians are very protective of their children; children are expected to show respect for their parents and elders. Teenage girls have more restrictions placed on them than teenage boys have and are expected to assist with domestic chores and caring for their younger siblings.
People and Community in USA
Teenagers here are very busy and overbooked. They are also given a lot of resources and privileges. They have a destructive behavior borne of a deep sense of entitlement and a desire to let loose and have fun after being constantly stressed out.
TASK 3. Brainstorming ways to counter discrimination in one’s daily life.(Lluvia de ideas sobre formas de contrarrestar la discriminación en la vida diaria.)
FOR EXAMPLE:
Gloria goes to her dentist for a routine appointment. She experiences panic attacks as one symptom of her long-term mental health condition. She suddenly runs out of the dental surgery in the middle of her treatment. The dentist says she is not prepared to treat her anymore because of her behaviour.
The dentist is refusing Gloria a service because of behaviour related to her disability. This may be discrimination.
But her dentist can justify that the decision if she can show that:
- she treated Gloria that way for a good reason, and it was appropriate and necessary in the circumstances, or
- she did not know or could not reasonably have known that Gloria had a disability.
TASK 4. Choosing pictures that demonstrate tolerance and empathy towards groups that are sometimes discriminated and finding ways to make sure these groups feel included in Ecuadorian society.
